A Move You Should Do MONDAY – Hurdle Step Over

Despite the name of this exercise, you do not need a hurdle to perform the hurdle step over. You simply need a 4″-6″ high object, like a water bottle, to step over. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Stand beside an object 4″-6″ high with your knee unlocked
  2. Keeping your pelvis level, step the other leg over and back
  3. Perform 15-20 repetitions. You should feel the muscle on the side of your hip working
  4. For a more challenging variation, place the object in front of your standing leg.

Why does this matter?

The hurdle step over is one of the best ways to teach the gluteus medius, your side butt muscle, how to work. Gluteus medius weakness is the most common cause of hip bursitis, resulting in lateral hip pain with walking, running and lying on that side.

So give the hurdle step over a try. Your hips will thank you.

Because nobody has time to be in pain.

Until next time…
