Hands On WEDNESDAY – Strain Counterstrain to the Iliopsoas

This video demonstrates the Strain-counterstrain technique, which is a gentle, passive manual therapy method used to treat musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. The iliopsoas, composed of the psoas major and iliacus muscles, is a deep hip flexor that can become tight or hypertonic due to prolonged sitting, poor posture, or overuse.

This tightness can lead to lower back pain, pelvic imbalances, and hip dysfunction. Strain-counterstrain works by identifying tender points—often associated with neuromuscular dysfunction—and positioning the body to shorten the affected muscle, reducing tension and discomfort.

This technique is non-invasive, well-tolerated, and effective in reducing pain, improving range of motion, and restoring normal muscle tone. It is particularly useful for patients who are sensitive to direct manipulation or have acute pain. Strain-counterstrain allows the body’s natural reflexes to reset, promoting healing and neuromuscular balance in the iliopsoas and surrounding structures.
