A Move You Should Do MONDAY – Yoga Block Thoracic Extension

This is one of my favorite stretches to do at the end of a long day. Here’s how to do the yoga block thoracic extension stretch:
- Place two yoga blocks in sequence.
- Sit at one end of them and slowly lower yourself to lie down onto the blocks. Your head should be gently hanging off
- Place your arms in the shape of a “T” and take five deep breaths (or hold for 30 seconds)
- The place your arms in the shape of an “I” and take five deep breaths
- Finally, place your arms in the shape of a “Y” and take five deep breaths
- Slowly pull one knee to your chest and sit up
Why does this matter?
The thoracic spine sits in the middle of the cervical spine (neck) and the lumbar spine (low back). Stiffness in the thoracic spine may cause increased pain in the neck and lower back. Tightness in the pectoral muscles and the latissimus dorsi are often associated with increased thoracic kyphosis (flexion).
Performing the yoga block thoracic extension stretch can counteract many of the postures you encounter during the day: sitting, working on a computer or looking at your phone.
So give this relaxing stretch a try.
Because nobody has time to be in pain.
Until next time…
