Hands On WEDNESDAY – How to release the Popliteus muscle

The popliteus muscle is located in the posterior region of the lower leg and originates from the lateral condyle of the femur and inserts on the tibia below the tibial condyles. It is one of the main posterolateral stabilisers of the knee joint and assists with both medial and lateral rotation of the knee.

However its primary function is to initiate knee flexion by laterally rotating the femur on the tibia, which is essential for unlocking the knee. If the knee gets into a “stuck” position, try this soft tissue release technique to the popliteus muscle, it is especially beneficial for post knee replacement patients.
