Hands On WEDNESDAY – Gastrocnemius Trigger point release

The Gastrocnemius muscle is situated posteriorly in the lower leg and is compromised of a medial and lateral head. It is a three joint muscle crossing the knee, subtalar joint and talocrural joint. It is a superficial muscle that can be seen and easily touched and its main function is planterflexion of the ankle and secondary as a knee flexor. Trigger points can form within the muscle when it gets chronically short and cannot elongate the muscle fibers. This leads to pain and discomfort and can affect the ankle, knee and hip joints due to the restriction.
