A Move You Should Do MONDAY – Med Ball Skater
The Med Ball Skater is a full body rotational movement to help your ankles, hips and thoracic spine mobility in the transverse plane. Here’s how to do it:
- Hold a medicine ball with two hands.
- Step to the left and squat down as you lower the ball to the outside of your left knee.
- Then step to the right as you raise the ball over your right shoulder
- Perform 6-10 repetitions
- Repeat by stepping to the right as you lower the ball to the outside of your right knee and then step to the left and raising the ball over your left shoulder
Why does this matter?
You are designed to move in three planes of motion: sagittal (front-to-back), frontal (side-to-side) and transverse (rotation). Of the three planes of motion, the transverse plane is the most important as this is where real life occurs. The med ball skater teaches you to move in the transverse plane in three key areas of rotation: subtalar joint, hips and thoracic spine. Unlocking rotation in these joints will help protect your low back, knees and shoulders from injury.
Give the med ball skater a try.
Because nobody has time to be in pain.
Until next time…
