Hands On WEDNESDAY – Strain Counterstrain to the common Elbow Secondary Extensors

Strain Counterstrain (SCS) is a manual therapy technique that targets muscle and joint dysfunction by positioning the body in ways that relieve tension. In this video we are applying it to the elbow secondary extensors with the goal to reduce hypertonicity, pain, and restricted motion caused by tightness in the muscle belly.

First you identify a tender point, usually located in the muscle belly or tendon, then the patient is passively positioned to shorten the muscle. This position is held for 90 seconds to allow a reduction in gamma gain and muscle spindle activity, which facilitates muscle relaxation and pain relief. After 90m seconds the forearm and elbow is passively returned to neutral and the tender point is reassesses. A successful SCS intervention should result in a significant decrease in tenderness and improved range of motion.
