A Move You Should Do MONDAY – Seated Butt Rockers

Man in red shirt sitting on stool exercise

This week’s move is a simple one that can solve a lot of problems. The seated butt rocker is one of the best ways we know to test and stretch the quadratus lumborum, a muscle that runs from your pelvis to your 12th rib.

Sit on a hard chair with your feet hip width apart and toes pointed straight ahead. Rock your weight to one side as you lift the other sit bone off the chair. Now repeat to the other side. Are they the same?

Why does this matter?

  1. A tight quadratus lumborum can create a leg length discrepancy by lifting one side of your pelvis higher than the other, making that leg feel shorter. A shorter leg will compensate by supinating, causing lateral ankle, lateral knee and medial hip injuries.
  2. A higher pelvis on one side can cause the same side shoulder to also be higher. An elevated shoulder girdle often lies at the root of rotator cuff injuries and cervicogenic headaches.

So give the seated butt rocker a try. It’s a small move that can fix big things.

Because nobody has time to be in pain.

Until next time…

Kind Regards,
