A Move You Should Do MONDAY – The Wall Wash
The wall wash is one of the best ways we know to level your shoulders. If you stand and look in the mirror, you might notice that one shoulder is higher than the other. This is also the case if you tend to carry a backpack, gym bag, purse or computer bag on one shoulder. You will hook it to the higher shoulder. Give that test a try. Try hooking your bag on the other shoulder. Does it fall off? Chances are you have one shoulder higher than the other.
The quadratus lumborum is a muscle that runs from your pelvis to your last rib. If it is tight, it will lift that side of your pelvis which will in turn elevate the shoulder on that same side. Doing the wall wash helps to lengthen this muscle.
Why does this matter?
One shoulder being higher than the other often lies at the root of headaches, neck aches and shoulder pain that occurs with reaching over head or looking down for prolonged periods of time.
