All About You FRIDAY – Hit Something

|

Have you ever held a pair of drumsticks in your hand? They give you an instant feeling of possibility. The ability to hit something with intention and not hurt anything is empowering. But not only that, there are real health benefits to drumming.

Last year, I signed up for an online drum class. I play guitar in a band, but I’m always a little envious of the drummer behind me. He always looks like he’s having so much fun and relieving so much stress. This class promised I would be a drummer in 30 days, so I decided to put it to the test. I came home every day for lunch and after downing a quick meal, I sat on the throne (this is what they call the drum seat) and banged out some rudimentary beats. In 30 days, I felt like a drummer. But more importantly, in less than 15 minutes, I began to feel a mental centering and clearing of my mind.

There is science that backs up the benefits of drumming, with drum circles becoming a popular activity to combat anxiety and improve social interaction. And though crashing some cymbals and banging on a full drum kit is a beautiful thing, you need nothing more than your hands and something to hit to reap the benefits of drumming. Here’s why drumming is good for you:

  1. Brings you joy. Drumming releases endorphins, enkephaline and Aslpha waves in your brain, giving you a feeling of well-being
  2. Relaxes you. Hour long drumming sessions have proven to reverse stress hormones in your blood
  3. May help with chronic pain by promoting endorphin and endogenous opiate production
  4. Enhances coordination and right and left brain activity
  5. Allows for personal expression and creativity

So, how do you get started? Buy some sticks. (These are my favorite) Or just use your hands. Here’s some fun links:

  1. Bucket drumming song – We Will Rock You
  2. Therapeutic Drum Circle
  3. Drums Alive Song – Shut Up and Dance (if you want to fit a workout in with drumming)

It’s been a long week. Get your rhythm on, or as we like to say in this house, “Time to break some sticks!” Don’t forget to celebrate.

Until next time…

Kind Regards,
